Wildfire smoke does not respect state lines. EPA guidance warns that smoke can affect communities far from an active fire, sometimes even when the sky does not look dramatic.

PARALLEL 1: DONORA LEARNED WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AIR CANNOT LEAVE

On October 27, 1948, fog settled over Donora, Pennsylvania.
Donora sat in a narrow river valley. Steel and zinc plants worked nearby. Their smoke was not new. The weather was.
A layer of warm air formed above colder air near the ground. This is called an inversion. It worked like a lid. Wind could not clear the valley. Factory fumes and fog stayed where people lived and breathed.
By October 31, rain and wind finally broke the trap.
The U.S. Public Health Service later found that 20 people died during the episode. Its house-to-house study said 5,910 people, about 43 percent of the town, were affected. Cough, sore throat, hard breathing, and eye irritation were common. Older adults and people with heart or lung trouble were hit hard.
Donora was an industrial disaster. A wildfire smoke day is not the same event. Today's air rules and pollution controls are also very different.
The narrow lesson is about trapped air.
Closing a door can slow smoke from entering a room. But a closed room is not magic. Air inside still needs a plan. It may need filtration. It should not have candles, smoke, frying, or aerosol spray adding more particles.
A boundary helps only when you manage what stays inside it.
Donora changed how America thought about air pollution. It showed that air can look like empty space while carrying a real load.
Your cleaner-air room starts with the same truth: air is part of the household system.
PARALLEL 2: ANCIENT PERSIA BUILT PATHS FOR AIR AND WATER

Ancient Persian communities faced a different air problem: fierce desert heat.
By the first millennium BCE, Persian builders were using underground channels called qanats to move water by gravity. The tunnels had upright shafts at set points. The shafts let workers enter. They also let air move through the system.
Over many centuries, Persian towns added another tool above ground: the badgir, or windcatcher.
The old desert city of Yazd is famous for these tall towers. Openings at the top catch a breeze. Shafts guide the air down into a room or across water. Warm air can move out through another path.
The buildings we can see in Yazd today come from many later periods. We should not pretend every windcatcher is an Achaemenid object.
But the long Persian design habit is clear. Water and air were not left to chance. Builders gave each one a route.
A windcatcher does not filter wildfire smoke. In smoky weather, pulling outside air indoors can make the problem worse.
The useful link is smaller: healthy air needs a chosen path and a chosen place.
Your modern version uses tools ancient Persia did not have. You can check AirNow. You can close the outside-air intake. You can set an air conditioner to recirculate. You can run a HEPA cleaner or a safe box-fan filter when official guidance says it fits.
Persian builders shaped a whole settlement around harsh air and scarce water. Your job is much smaller.
Pick one room. Know how air enters it. Know what makes particles inside it. Put your best filter there.
That turns a vague hope into a working room.
