On July 26, 2026, Montana's smoke forecast said smoke from fires in Oregon and Washington would keep affecting air quality in parts of the state.
Two days earlier, AP reported that Oregon crews were fighting dozens of fires, including the Akawa Butte Fire near Sisters, which had become the nation's highest-priority wildfire.
CDC and EPA guidance says wildfire smoke can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. EPA also says smoke from outdoors can get indoors and make indoor air unhealthy too.
That is the part many people miss.
We treat air like background. But your body treats air like an input. You take it in all day, every day.
PARALLEL 1: DONORA, PENNSYLVANIA, 1948

Donora showed how air can turn a whole town's routine into a health problem.
In late October 1948, Donora, Pennsylvania, sat in a bend of the Monongahela River with steel and zinc works nearby.
The town was used to factory smoke. That was not new.
What changed was the air above the town.
A weather pattern called a temperature inversion settled over the valley. Warm air acted like a lid. Cooler air stayed near the ground. Smoke and industrial pollution that usually moved away stayed trapped where people lived.
From October 27 to October 31, the town sat inside a thick, dirty fog. People coughed. Some had trouble breathing. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission says atmospheric conditions on October 30 and 31 helped cause nineteen deaths in one 24-hour period. The Donora Historical Society says the full event caused 20 deaths.
One concrete detail matters here: the problem was not only the smoke. It was the smoke plus the trapped air plus the people who had to keep living inside it.
That is why Donora changed how America thought about air. It helped push the clean-air movement forward because it made one thing plain: air is not just scenery. It can become a health condition.
The scale today is different. A smoky week in one region is not the same as Donora's industrial disaster.
But the household pattern rhymes.
When bad air gets trapped where people eat, sleep, and recover, the body pays attention before the mind does. A scratchy throat, heavy head, dry eyes, poor sleep, or low energy may be your first clue.
The lesson is not to panic.

PARALLEL 2: ROME'S HYPOCAUST

Romans did not solve modern air quality, but their hypocaust shows an old idea: separate dirty air from living space.
Ancient Rome had a clever heating idea called the hypocaust.
It was used in baths and some homes across the Roman world. A furnace burned wood outside or below the main room. Hot air moved under a raised floor. In some buildings, it also moved through hollow wall tiles before leaving through vents.
Canterbury Museums describes the system this way: hot air from a wood-burning furnace outside the house was drawn under the floor, moved between stacks of tiles, then went up through wall pipes and out near roof level.
That is a very old comfort system.
It was not modern clean air. It used fire. It used smoke. It was often worked by enslaved labor. We should not romanticize it.
But the design teaches a useful pattern.
The Romans understood that heat and smoke should not be treated as the same thing. Heat was useful. Smoke was waste. So the system tried to move the useful part into the room and move the dirty part away from the people using the room.
That is the same plain idea behind a clean-air routine today.
You do not need a Roman bathhouse. You need a basic separation rule.
Keep outdoor smoke out when air is poor. Keep indoor smoke and dust from being created. Move air through a real filter when you can. Give the body one room where it does not have to fight the whole house.
The ancient tool was stone, tile, fire, and flue.
