The important point was not a miracle claim.

It was a pattern: people with longer daytime light exposure and steadier light patterns tended to have earlier sleep and wake timing. More stable daytime light was also linked with stronger deep sleep early in the night.

CDC/NIOSH sleep-training guidance makes the everyday version plain: bright light can improve daytime alertness and sleep at bedtime, while light at the wrong time can shift the body clock.

That detail is easy to miss.

Daylight was treated as a household resource. Not because the sun changed, but because the routine around the sun changed.

The law also exposed a conflict. Many farmers disliked the change because farm work still followed dew, animals, and sunlight more than a clock on the wall. That feels strange to a modern reader because we live by fixed clock blocks. A meeting is thirty minutes whether the sun is high, low, hidden, or gone.

But the older system reveals a useful idea: the day was not treated as a flat grid. Light shaped the rhythm.

That does not mean ancient timekeeping was healthier in every way. Ancient Egypt and Rome did not have modern sleep medicine, blackout curtains, shift-work research, or wearable data. The point is narrower: they were less likely to pretend that daylight was irrelevant to daily rhythm.
